Unheard Voices, Unheard Wisdom features life-sized mixed-medium sculptures and paintings representing a challenging social problem —-domestic violence and sexual assault —- in thought-provoking understatement. Alaska, my home, has the dubious distinction of leading the nation in domestic violence and sexual assault per capita. Roughly one in two Alaskan women have endured one form of violence or another. Unheard Voices, Unheard Wisdom focuses on the epidemic of violence against women.
The past several years, my paintings and sculptures have depicted the inner strength and wisdom of women. During these years it became evident to enjoy fulfilling lives women must become more intentional about healing the wounds of domestic violence and sexual assault. We, as a society at large, need to listen to and acknowledge the wisdom of survivors of domestic violence to empower them to change, to heal, and most importantly, to learn how to stop the cycle of domestic violence that apparently and certainly stalks the next generation.
